Welcome

Welcome to the on-line gallery of ceramic artist Pauline Hughes.

It is my misfortune-and probably my delight-to use things as my passions tell me....I put all the things I like into my pictures. The things-so much the worse for them; they just have to put with it. Picasso

My ceramic art is a celebration of female beauty and the strength of character that lies beneath it. Working in a bold and voluptuous style I aim to create strong, individual women with a majestic and proud presence.

My latest sgraffito pieces uses a process of 'scratching' through a layer of colour to reveal a contrasting colour beneath. My tiles are given a top coat of black slip which I scribe into to reveal the white clay body underneath which creates a highly tactile surface. Unlike my painting I limit my palette to black and white which gives the work a very dramatic look.

To create my paintings I work on ceramic panels building up layers of ceramic underglaze to create richly coloured surfaces. Through kiln firing the art work becomes permanent and it is then mounted into bespoke frames. The frames are made and coloured by myself, with gilding on selected areas to create a touch of opulance for my women.

Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information or, would like to commission a piece of art work. I update my site with each new piece of work produced so please remember to look in regularly on the changing faces of my women.
